It is officially the season of Autumn, which means we are coming into prime planting season. Why is Fall the best time to plant most trees and shrubs?

Temperatures begin to cool off, but the soil is still warm enough for plant roots to continue growing, helping them get established before going dormant in the coldest part of winter.

While new plants may need a little water at first, water needs are much lower compared with Spring plantings, when the temperature is steadily increasing. This means less work for YOU!

Trees and shrubs planted in the Fall have a better success rate than those planted during Spring and Summer.

Even many perennials (flowers that last more than 1 season) can be planted in the Fall. While they may or may not be in bloom at the time of planting, their roots can get a jump start on the coming season, and when the new growth begins in the spring, their established root system will prepare them for the warmer months ahead.

Many plant shoppers find extra enthusiasm to get outside and plant in the springtime after staying indoors for most of the winter. But while planting can be done year-round in Georgia, if you want to make it easy on yourself and give your new plants the best chance to thrive, there is clearly a BEST time of year for planting, and it’s the Fall!
