Always wanted a weeping Japanese maple but felt you had too much sun? We have the tree for you! Acer palmatum var. dissectum ‘Red Dragon’ Japanese maple will hold up well in this situation. The Red Dragon emerges in the spring with cherry red new growth turning to burgundy with dissected leaves also known as lace leaf.
The Red Dragon holds its magnificent brilliant burgundy leaves all the way until fall even in the warmest climates. The fall color will not let you down as it takes on a beautiful shade of scarlet. Don’t think its over when winter arrives! The dark purple cascading branches will stand out in any garden.
The Red Dragon Japanese maple will reach the height of 8-12 feet tall and 8-12 feet wide, making it an ideal tree as a specimen or to bring alive any garden you may have. This tree is hardy in Zones 5-8. In colder climates this maple should be protected from freezing winds. In warmer climates Red Dragon can tolerate full sun or partial shade, but in the heat of summer, it should have adequate water if planted in full sun. The Red Dragon is another low maintenance Japanese maple, and pruning is not required.
Whether you need a great specimen or just need to add color on your patio, in a garden, or in your yard, the Red Dragon Japanese maple would make a great choice.
